I wonder why they never used the body of the 50watt merc to do the 50watt SON in?

Good point Rich! I've often wondered the same. A reduced size would've made more sense. That said, the 50w arc tube isn't much smaller than the 70w. Thorn's experimental 40w SON was in a pearl 50w mercury size envelope. Such a cute little thing!
