Comments: | A nice Alpha Nine still survives on one of the industrial estates in Bedford. There are quite a few down this stretch of road. Once, they were the main column and lantern used all over Bedford. |

Good to see sox period!

Irridiums are creeping in Bradford too, not a bad looking lantern tbh.
Iridiams seemed to be the lantern of choice, they have great optics
I would be jumping for joy to see iridiums down here ANYTHING but LED

Thorn Alpha 9 is my favourite lantern on the Thorn Alpha range?
It is a hard decision to make... Thorn made some great lanterns in the past, the Alpha One (which I don't care for the looks of but it was a revolutionary design) and other favourites of mine, the Alpha Six and Alpha Three.
I like the Thorn Alpha 3 as well

Nice old column...Less so the Trueform Classic bus shelter in the foreground...(expensive, poorer quality) knockoff of the Commutaports Cairngorm shelter that's been around since the early 90s...
LOL Zel... I wouldn't know one bus shelter from another
OK well that concrete column dates back to the 50s so i wonder what was the predecessor of the Alpha 9?
There are areas of Bedford that are still lit by GEC Z9484 / Z9494 so I would imagine they would have been a GEC offering of sorts?

There was a day when I didn't know one shelter from another...that was before I spent nearly eight years looking after a network of 1236 bus stops, roughly 600 of which had shelters! Yes...I did explicitly specify switchstart fluorescent for lighting! We had a trial of some solar in some shelters that it wasn't practical to get a mains feed into in areas with little or no lighting, they never seemed to last though unfortunately. Where we had mains though, LED and HF were both banned in my book!

Ok thanks Paul
