It is nice to see the early lamps running, theres not that many photos of SO and SOI lamps running today.

It looks especially good at this stage when the sodium at the centre of the tube just begins to vaporise and become envloped in its yellow glow

Great picture! . Whats a SOI though? Never heard that one before.. (Looks SOX-ish in the picture)

SOI stood for SOdium Integral. It was the immediate predecessor to SOX, using a single piece lamp rather than the separate dewar jacket used on the earlier SO/H lamps. Usually one or two extra internal glass sleeves were used for thermal insulation rather than the IR reflective coating on SOX lamps.
