Coloured tubes are cool!

Postby Tom » Sun Mar 06, 2011 1:59 pm

It seems just about everyone on this site has a love of coloured tubes! I am not talking about colour sprayed white tubes either! Proper coloured phosphors that give bright, awesome blues, greens, pinks and pinkish reds such as Radar Red and the Osram red. Although they're very dim, I also like the old solid reds which seem to be very rare these days! Gold are pretty cool too, like the red, these appear the same colour unlit since they have a coloured coating between a white phosphor and the tube.

I have always loved coloured fluorecents since I first saw them at St Giles Fair, Oxford and in Blackpool when I was little! Seeing what looked like normal white tubes unlit becoming these amazing colours just fascinated me! :D

These days, it's nice to see that Osram and Philips are still making colours in T8s, even if most seem to be blue (although a very nice blue!) since a market has opened up for blue lighting in public toilets to deter drug injections since veins are hard to see in blue light!

Coloured tubes are now highly sought after, as recent activity on Ebay show, much to the annoyance of fellow members! Radar Reds are as rare as rocking hores s*** although myself and close_9 are lucky enough to own a couple between us.

Suffice to say, coloured tubes are cool! 8-)

Does anyone know where you can buy CFL's with a coloured phosphor?
The only ones I can find anywhere are physically coloured. The ones I am after look like a standard CFL until they are switched on.

I know the ones you mean. 'Proper' coloured spirals have been around, Pro-lite I think but they are all now the lacquered variety! I remember coloured 2Ds! They were awesome!! Used to have a red but dropped it sadly many moons ago :(

I think Osram are still making coloured 9w PLs. These would be the best option in my opinion! :D

Around the same time a Northlight T12 Thorn 2ft tube got gassed but that was a complete mystery.

Nice i like North light! I know someone that has almost a box of T12 125W 8 Footers in north light! I think Osram do PL-S lamps in all colours that are white when not lit. I got some greens and blues for my friends fish pond lights which were 2X9W PL-S lamps.

Well I do hope Osram still make them! I have some Wotans in blue, red and green and they are simply AWESOME!! :D
Pop one in a proper magnetic PL BC adapter and you have a proper coloured CFL! Job done! The coloured pig's whatsits are ok but will disappoint with early failures!

Cool 8-) .. never thought about using colored lamps on the fishpond .. I've just got common 3000k F32T8 on it (with a crappy instant-start ballast that likes to die LOL blue might look really cool but i wouldn't risk one there)
