High voltage cable/wire

Hi, does anyone know of a source of wire suitable for running between the ignitor and lampholder for HPS or MH lamps..? I've been told that ordinary wiring is unsuitable due to the HV pulse from the ignitor, which as you know can be anything up to 5kV.

Most internal wiring in HID luminaires and lanterns is done with heat resistant singles. Tri-rated switchgear cable would an ideal candidate as its available in several colours and heat resistant to 105C. 0.75mm or 1mm sq. would be suffecient in most circuits.

Thanks, that gives me something to work with. Have you any suppliers in mind..?

It's not uncommon to see the control gear in older streetlights located in the base of the column, with the lamp on it's own at the top. I've certainly seen ignitors at the column base before. it's not that common now, but it was once the done thing. Wiring used to connect to the top of the fitting was often little more than 1.5mm or 2.5mm T+E!

The TLC link above is probably your best bet!

Hi Richard,

Thanks for that, I was really thinking of the demo/test boards I make, some people on LG said that I should use pulse-rated wiring from the ignitor to the lampholder and I was wondering what the best thing was. I've seen wire like the TLC stuff, but none of it specifically mentions HV ignitor pulses.

I've not had any problems using wire stripped from T+E, so I'll carry on using that..!
