Just seen on BBC Look East that that Cambridgeshire County Council has decided to snuff the REVO Richardson's Candles for good. The whole lot are going to be removed and replaced with some horrendous looking needle thin vertical lantern with some sort of MH lamp in the top.

That is just tragic! You should start a campaign to keep them! These look like lovely old lanterns too! What tubes are they running? Here in Oxford, we gradually lost all our good lanterns starting with the old fluo lanterns on St. Giles, loads of Thorn Alpha 3s, some lovely old GEC? 250w MBF/U lanterns and B group MBF/U lanterns such as Elecos from 1980 onwards. Stuff like Alpha 4s and Beta 5s came and went, now its all modern Urbis junk! :(

They run 4x 5' 80W MCFs for the column mounted ones and 3 for the wall mounted ones. We're going the same way here with things slowly. I should think if these are going then those Junior Sol-Eterns twin 2 footer lanterns I found will be going too  .

I will look into what's happening with them exactly, I don't think I stand much chance of getting hold of one though.

Shame we never had these in Oxford. They blend in nicely with the old College buildings! No doubt these originally had BC holders!

Eliot you really need to get on to this like today! You could even sell one of those columns on ebay for an absolute FORTUNE! Its all about speaking to the correct people and finding out where they are going. Find out what company CCC use to look after the street lighting in your area then contact them. If all else fails you need to speak to the councils highway department and find out whats happening with all the lights!

I have seen one of these with 2, 5 foot twin Thorn PPs in with 840 tubes, that didn`t look a bad set up.

Surely it would be cheaper to upgrade the internals then replace the whole column.

I cant see there being too much wrong with the internals, Probably some cock sitting in an office somewhere thinking they can put in a more """Efficient""" light.

When i was at my Nanas in 2004, (thats not far at all from Eliot), I remember seeing the Street lighting guys that were called "Ringway" So I don't know if they are still going, Also I have seen vans with "Amey" printed on them more recently when ive been there so I think they may have taken over the PFI for there... The Gaffer guy i spoke to in 2004 was called Richard Bream, He was very helpful and with any luck he may still be there... Ill search for who it is and see if i can come up with a number / Email for them.

Surely these cant just be Scrapped... as they are too nice, I wonder if one or two will go to a Museum? or something or maybe be Restored and put Elsewhere?

Councils just have no idea. These lanterns go perfectly with the architechture of Cambridge City and are part of its history.

There's a good article about them on Simon Cornwell's site:
