Im just not sure what the huge obsession is with LED street lights when there are SONs and CMH that blow them out of the water? I think people just hear LED and then instantly think they are the most efficient best option???

Short answer : seconded Kev

Long answer :

They expect a "most efficient lamp", "that lasts forever", "with white light"

Any combination of 2 of those is attainable with HID :
- Efficient + lasts forever : HPS (yes the good ones do last 10+ years on full-night)
- Lasts forever + good white light : mercury
- White light + efficient : MH

And combination of all 3 with fluorescent, which exists for many decades allready

But since LED is so high tec/cool/green/efficient/lasts forever/etc they choose LED. Nevermind the unavoidable light deprecation over time, and when there is a problem you have to replace the whole bloody fixture and not a lamp

WHen the efficiency table popped up in Physics, showing the lighting sources' efficiencies with SOX at the very top, the whole class were all like isn't the LED the most efficient. The teacher then redirected all questions to me so I could dispell all the propaganda.

In regards to MH's lifetime, are the larger CMH lamps living up to expectations? I wouldn't mind a 400w CMH-T to play with.
