SRS Ballast Capacitor?

Postby Anselmo » Wed Dec 06, 2017 7:20 pm

Hi all.
I was given a 5ft cromton twin SRS fitting for free a while ago. Im intending on using it in my garage if possible.
I was told that whilst the previous owner was changing a tube (whilst still on) he heard a bang from inside the fitting. Turns out the capacitor thats wired in & out lf the ballast has exploded.
I dont wanna wire it up & risk it but is there any chance i can boycott the use of a capacitor?Or is there anywhere i could purchase a replacement?or is the circuit un-useable?
Cheers.

I'm afraid if that's an SRS fitting (which the 4 terminals on the ballast show that it is) the capacitor is essential. Wiring it out isn't an option on that circuit. I.m going to guess you need an 8.4mfd capacitor for that - what does it say on the label? I've not seen that rating of capacitor on sale anywhere for ages now, but I've probably got a spare!
It's not lost, I just can't find it!

Actually, just zoomed in your picture after typing that - if it's just that little cap in the picture that's gone, that's an RF suppression capacitor (not essential). Is there a larger metal or plastic sleeved cap in the circuit? This *could* be quickstart rather than SRS. Any chance we can see a picture of the whole of the ballasts, one that shows the full label and both ends? Cheers.
