Who makes the best HF ballast?

Postby Tom » Thu Jan 13, 2011 7:04 pm

Ok, so we all know that HF ballasts have a terrible habit of failing early. From the big names such as Tridonic down to the no-better-than-CFL-innards inside some flimsy plastic cover, these are not very popular within the maintainence fraternity! So the burning question (for the benefit of those seeking replacements).....
Which make of HF ballast is best?
I LOVE LAMP!

Philips/Osram are the best. I think the newer HF by Tridonic is BETTER but still a decent magnetic would outlast them X10 over!

Yes Philips are ***** So are OSRAM as both Ballasts are now made in Bloody china! :vomit :vomit I wpuld say that all HF ballasts are as bad as each other now

My 8W Matchbox has been a very good ballast so-far, it is working well, it has done 13 months of 15 hours a day and how ever long it did before i got it (as it was used). with the original 8Watt tube that i put in that was heavily end banded when i first put it in 13 months ago!

Yeah the matchboxes seem very well made, even then though, nothing compared to SS/SRS!

I think HF ballasts are OK. I have them in all my fittings fitted by myself. The only fitting that has been allowed to stay switch start in my vintage Thorn Poppack, but that does have an electronic starter.
I like to use Tridonic or Osram ballasts I have also fitted Arlen. To date they have all been sound. I have a Thorn Hf ballasts over 20 years old and runs 5 ft 58/65w lamps, still runs fine.
Modern magnetic ballasts aren't as good as the old one's. If you don't replace failed lamps promptly, the ballasts over heat's and fails. The choke fails before the lamp electrode fails. HF ballasts shut down to protect themselves.

Have to agree with Kev here, I rip tons of the bloody things out too. Generally find that quite a lot fail before the first tube has died - you replace the ballast and the same tube carries on working. I'm switch-start all the way, so long as you maintain them and don't leave failed lamps or starters in them, they'll outlast anything HF. Switch-start with either an electronic starter or one of those Osram starters with the re-settable cut-out to protect the ballast is always going to win!
It's not lost, I just can't find it!

Don't get me wrong you can get a good batch, some of the early philips HF-P's etc but for the ultimate in reliability SS is the by far the best with pulse starters!

See below 1994 Fitzgerald 8's in a delivery depot have been run 24/7 hammered and still working wonder how many PC258HFPro ballasts you would of gone through lol
