65w T12 tubes on 58w HF gear

Post by Andy » Sun May 25, 2014 7:26 pm

I have a twin 58w HF fitting but have never tried it with 65w T12 tubes as I was pretty sure that this would not be a good idea due to voltage differences between T8 and T12 tubes.
However, I was wondering again today whether anyone has actually tried it and is it likely to knacker the ballast or damage the tubes in any way?
Your thoughts would be appreciated.

Andy

Yeah I've done it too, had a 65W T12 running in a 5' HF vapourproof at work for over a year now! The operating voltage of the T12 is only a few volts higher than the T8.

Theres really nothing in it between both lamps.
MCFE 65/80W 1500mm (5ft)= 110 volt, @ 0.67 amp
TLD 58W 1500mm (5ft) = 111 volt, @ 0.68 amp

Philips electrical data for each given tube.

Plus anyone who owns or remembers any of the old Thorn HF ballasts will recall they were rated for both T8 and T12 tubes!

I've also noticed that T12s do a nice fade-in on programmed start HF due to the argon filling!
I LOVE LAMP!

Tried it and works fine with a nice bit of fade in as Tom suggested!

Thanks for that data Rich, very useful - do you have the data for other lengths and diameters of tubes as it would be useful to have this on hand sometimes?
