I have a strange fetish for swimming pool lighting!!! , and over the Olympics I have been closely watching all the swimming and diving in our super cool aquatics center, and trying to work out what floods they have used?
My first thought was Thorns Contrast range, but looking at different photos they look more Philips now, any guesses from you guys?, see here.
Whilst watching the womens syncro diving yesterday, I pondered weather they had `gon green` and fitted LED, but the shadows on the poolside are far too sharp to be LED, only the wonders of the halide lamp can do that.
Standard 400W fixtures make a very good pool lighting as well
There was a pool i was going to as a kid (12 years ago). It had a big translucent arch roof made of plastic. Under it, the lighting was with ordinary 400W floodlights attached along the support beams. The floodlights were mixed MH and HPS (most MH, few HPS mixed in at intervals) and together they made bright white light. Due to the displacement between the MH and HPS, the shadows had all some tint - either orange or blue (depending on which lamp is the shadow from), esp. shadows in the water
But the real awesomeness was being there in winter evenings, there was the added LOUD noise of rain on the roof, the glass in the floodlights coated in foggy condensation up in the cold and moist air above the steam rising from the pool, lightnings flashing and their light getting in through the translucent roof, and eventually a momentary power interruption from the lightning followed by darkness, (and screams echoing above the water). flashing lamps trying to hot restrike, and light coming back on at random fixtures over several minutes, first the HPS and later the MH. All that when standing in the water below it
Great thing to experience Ash, seems the mix of halide and SON are a commen thing for pool lighting. We have 2 big pools near me, one with halide and SON mixed in twin floods, and another that has 250 and 400watt MBFs in highbays. But none as good as the mighty MHN at 2000watt, in Philips`s ArenaVision.
