24 Carat Gold Popular Pack

Postby SuperSix » Sat Jan 28, 2012 7:20 pm

I couldn't quite believe this myself but it is apparently true.

I was doing a bit of repair work on an old 1970s Popular Pack the other day at work which caught the eye of someone I work with who remembers when we used to sell them (been there some years). Reminded him of 'something I'd be interested in'. Apparently going back several years Newey & Eyre were doing some promotion with Thorn to boost sales of Popular Packs... by producing a 24 Carat gold PP158! :o I refused to believe it but he was insisting they did, no jokes!

I need to find out more from him about this but it sounded somewhat like this gold fitting was either hidden in amongst regular Popular Packs sealed up in cardboard boxes, somewhat like the golden tickets from Charlie and the Chocolate Factory or you gained promotional points with every fitting you bought and with enough points you would win the fitting! :o

I'll have to find out more about this on Monday!

Interesting, the points thing sounds more likely, as, if just hidden the weight of the thing would be a bit of a giveaway?

YES YES YES YES YES This is TRUE I remember in a 8 foot i removed once from a school i FOUND a leaflet with this on! This was an early 80s Style PP but this was back in 2006 i remember it clearly because it was when those ***** bombed the london underground.
I then showed what i found to a teacher in the school who wanted to ""borrow"" the leaflet to show her children. That was the last time i saw it! I do however remember something about points and im sure the points had to be submitted before sometime is 1986!! I Just cant rememnber. Wish i kept it!

So this would be gold plated or pure gold? Surely pure gold wouldn't be strong enough to make a batten out of...
